Coyotes are also referred to as Canis Latrans which translates to "barking dog" are carnivorous animals which belong to the Canidae family. They are also popularly referred to as the American jackal by zoologists due to their avid resemblance to jackals and even wolves. Such characteristics like grayish or yellowish-brown fur present on the top parts of the body and white fur on the lower parts of the body, presence of triangular ears on the top of the head, hairy tail, distinctly yellow eyes and a black nose can be associated with Coyotes.
Coyotes are widely found throughout North America, South America, Mexico and Central America. They are versatile species, highly adaptable and are able to live in tropical climates. Due to the high adaptability of coyotes, they are able to survive in both wild and urban areas.
Although, Coyotes were originally located in the wild areas, however it is seen that they tend to migrate to urban areas in search of new territories because young coyotes love to look for new territories to stake their claim which they also protect with their lives. This doesn’t mean that they don’t change territories. This makes them wander into suburbs and quiet areas but as these areas become occupied, they tend to move deeper into urban areas with high population density and continue to live there as long as they are able to survive and reproduce. Coyotes rarely attack humans and as such they are able to live in close proximity with people in areas that are densely populated. Urban coyotes have a longer lifespan and live majorly in parks and natural habitats. They also move freely around in search of food. This doesn’t mean they can’t hurt human also, however, there must be a prompting. Therefore, they live in wild areas as well as urban areas.
